Europe- Back from the Dead? was a one-off documentary produced by Animo that talked to the key figures involved in the negotiation of the EU Constitution and features an in depth contribution from Tony Blair and several senior Irish diplomats never before seen on television. It also includes a new interview with former-Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, where he gives his views on the negotiations and importantly, what happens next to the Constitution?
Europe- Back from the Dead? examines, through interview with the people who actually took part, the ‘behind the scenes’ negotiations that led to the agreement of the European Constitution at the final summit in June 2004.
The story takes us through the six months of the Irish Presidency, the key events and players and ultimately illustrates the successful strategy that was employed by the Irish Presidency in securing the Constitutional Treaty.
This was a significant achievement for Ireland. When Ireland took over from the Italians at the beginning of 2004, most commentators felt that getting an agreement would be virtually impossible. The European project seemed to be on the rocks. Tony Blair himself states in the programme, “I have to say, I think I may have said this to Bertie at the time, I thought it was a very tough task that he was trying to get.”
Despite all the obstacles, the Irish Presidency succeeded.
Yet, two years on- Europe and the Constitution were again in Limbo after the French and Dutch referenda. We asked the Taoiseach, whether or not the Constitution is now truly dead and if the Irish people will get a chance to have their say on the constitution.
This documentary also features exclusive and rare contributions from Bobby McDonagh and Anne Anderson – two of Ireland’s most senior diplomats who were at the forefront of Ireland’s efforts during the presidency.
Europe- Back from the Dead? is essential watching and a captivating look at what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ in Europe’s premier political scene.
